The goal of academic midwifery education is to send reflective midwives on their way. Based on their specific knowledge and empathy, they will accompany women in an individualized and needs-oriented manner.
Prof. Dr. Anne Kasper

A study programme of the Health Campus Göttingen

A co-operation between the HAWK and the UMG.

What is this study programme all about?

The programme addresses the needs of the profession of midwifery. This includes findings from evidence-based research as well as traditional midwifery knowledge.

The study programme creates a link between scientific, evidence-based work and practical work in clinics and non-clinical jobs. With the Bachelor's degree in midwifery, you will gain the knowledge, skills and methods to work independently and scientifically as a midwife.

What can I do with it later?

Graduates of the Bachelor's degree programme in midwifery practice the profession of midwifery in a variety of different settings:

  • employed in clinics or medical practices
  • freelance in clinics (midwife)
  • freelance with their own practice (prenatal care, births, postpartum care)
  • in birthing centers
  • in interdisciplinary teams (counseling centers, health offices, youth welfare offices)
  • further qualification at colleges/universities

What makes the study programme special?

The course of study comprises 3 areas of learning that are closely interlinked:

  • Theory
  • Skills lab
  • Practical study phases

You will practice your theoretical knowledge first on a model in the skills lab and then put it into practice. In the practical study phases, you will get to know the everyday working life of midwives in the maternity ward, delivery room, maternity unit and out-of-hospital setting.

University-based and practical phases alternate during the course of the study programme.
