Social Work and Participation in Rural Areas of Migration Societies: A Study of Glocal Conditions in Lower Saxony (Germany), Oregon (USA), and Çanakkale (Turkey)
This research project examines the role of social work in rural migration societies, using Lower Saxony (Germany), Oregon (USA), and Çanakkale (Turkey) as case studies. While urban areas are often the focus of research and practice, the challenges and opportunities facing rural regions remain largely unexplored. SATURN analyzes social, cultural, and economic inclusion processes, identifies local needs, and develops practical recommendations for action. Using document analysis, interviews, focus groups, and qualitative comparative analysis (QCA), the project draws on transnational perspectives to develop innovative models for social work and adapt them to the specific conditions in Lower Saxony.
The project pursues three main objectives:
- Analysis of the current situation and its context:
Examination of social, cultural, and economic inclusion/exclusion, with particular attention to gender issues and intersectional perspectives on people with a migration background in rural areas of Lower Saxony (Germany), Oregon (USA), and Çanakkale (Turkey). - Identification of local needs and potential solutions:
Mapping the specific challenges and needs of people with a migration background and people of color, as well as how these are addressed by social work practitioners. - Development of recommendations for action:
Formulation of practice-oriented strategies and models for social work to promote the inclusion and coexistence of migrants in rural areas.
